Implicature and Semantic Change

چکیده
The notion of implicature is not precisely defined, and may be compared to a concept with prototypical and peripheral instances. A prototypical implicature is a particularized conversational implicature as first proposed by Grice (1975), in which the implicature is intended by the speaker, dependent on the particular context of utterance, and calculated by identifiable inferential steps, including certain communicative principles as premisses -in Grice's theory, the Cooperative Principle and its constitutive maxims, most importantly the maxims of Quantity and Relation. (Implicatures calculated under Quantity and Relation are discussed in more detail below.) Implicatures of this kind, though differently classified, remain important in post-Gricean and Neo-Gricean theories of communication.

Direct Reference and Implicature
2 I. According to some formulations of the theory of Direct Reference the semantic value, relative to a context of utterance, of rigid singular terms such as proper names and indexicals is just their referent. This position seems to preclude an accurate account of such terms as they behave in natural languages, since it is easy to construct examples of coreferential rigid singular terms embedde...
متن کاملElectrophysiology of Pragmatic Processing: Exploring the Processing Cost of the Scalar Implicature in the Truth-Value Judgment Task
Most theoretical as well as empirical work regarding the scalar implicature not all of the quantifier some has focused on the controversy of whether this implicature is generated by default or based on context. Independently of this question, it can be also asked whether this scalar implicature contributes to the truth-conditional content of sentences. We present results of an ERP study which t...
متن کاملReflections on Jennifer Saul's View of Successful Communication and Conversational Implicature
Saul (2002) criticizes a view on the relationship between speaker meaning and conversational implicatures according to which speaker meaning is exhaustively comprised of what is said and what is implicated. In the course of making her points, she develops a couple of new notions which she calls “utterer-implicature” and “audience-implicature”. She then makes certain claims about the relationshi...
متن کاملOn the Problem of Lexical Semantic Change
The article provides an insight into a problem of lexical semantic change. A short historical outline of the development of semantic studies is given. The authors analyze some of the most important stages in the history of the formation of this field. The existing approaches to dealing with form and meaning, namely semasiological and onomasiological ones are discussed. The authors consider the ...
متن کاملOn-line Interpretation of Scalar Quantifiers: Insight into the Semantic-Pragmatics Interface
The relationship between semantic and pragmatic interpretation has been a perennial puzzle in psycholinguistics. General agreement about the existence of these levels of interpretation contrasts with controversy in the field over exact boundaries between these representations and their relationship in real-time processing. Past research has demonstrated that pragmatic processing is rapid, often...
